In Turin, at the end of the 800s, heterosexual prostitutes who worked in brothels got tattooed a mole on the left cheek, rarely on the corner of the left eye (to point out that they were under medical control) while lesbians got one tattooed above the upper lip on the right, or under the lower lip on the left; the image of a dahlia was also a sign of recognition among lesbians.
